Research That Matters
What is the role of a research organization -- in a company and in society? First and foremost, it is research itself --
to pursue truth, to unravel the fundamental characteristics of problems, and to invent universal mechanisms to solve those problems.
At IBM, we must ensure that our research makes a real difference for our company and for the world. In his book
Pasteur's Quadrant, Prof. Donald Stokes of Princeton University proposed a new model for research organizations --
"basic research strongly motivated by specific applications." As Sam Palmisano, IBM Chairman, President and CEO,
has said -- innovation occurs at the intersection of invention and insight.
At Tokyo Research Laboratory, we are very conscious of the potential impact our research projects
may have on our company and in society.
Tokyo Research Laboratory is part of a network of 3,000 researchers in eight IBM research labs worldwide.
We work closely with IBM Global Services, Software Group, Technology Group, and Sales and Distribution to maximize
the impact of our research results. We also collaborate with clients, academia, and government offices.
Insights we have acquired through these enormously diverse interactions are critical for us to innovate.
In 2007, we celebrated our 25th anniversary and renewed our focus
on being a world-class IT research institute.
